NLC Unique story, unfair advantage
We’d like to help you to be the hero in your advanced composites story – not one of the many hundreds & thousands that have tried and given up.
We’re stubborn: We couldn’t build big composite boats until we’d improved parts of the Vacuum Resin Infusion process and the choice of the materials for UK composite vacuum infusion – resins, cloths & foam core. Believe it or not, that makes this our “side hustle” ๐
We’re helpful: We have materials & have developed technology that F1, McClaren, Ferrari & Koenigsegg don’t have, nor do Lockheed Martin, Rolls-Royce or even SpaceX …. yet !!! Watch for video’s showcasing our inventions also using unique materials.
We’re social: Our community is guaranteed to be “interesting” to be part of !!! We want to learn as much from you as you learn from us.
We’re cheap: As a start-up we’ve had to optimise for time and money in a world that doesn’t have enough of either. Great materials at low cost is 1/3rd of it, sharing knowledge and having help accessible is the other 2/3rds.
Combined, it means we are governed by enthusiasm, productivity & innovation: not by meeting payroll, premises or shareholder dividends.
Community
As our drive is to make big fast sailing boats we are literally on the same path as our ‘customers’: overcoming limitations, integrating technologies & trying to produce high quality composites repeatedly.
People fail bacause they’re on their own, buying products from warehouses with speedy delivery, without the community to help them to get through the dry spots ๐ That’s why we’re actively building a community & shared knowledge-base – some answers are out there and if a library of recommended links doesn’t give the answer, we’ll put it in our experiment job-stack.
We’ll be making CAD in composites video’s & giving away our own advanced templates derived from the knowledge & methods we use to make our molds. We’re reasonably advanced ourselves with spreadsheet-derived parameter driven CAD models. Our community can help you become good enough that you’re 3DP printing from your own CAD designs in weeks not years.
We’re working on solutions around turning the 2 meter metal pro-grade infusion table that we’ve just made & we’re just finishing video-ing into an orderable solution. In the coming months we’re looking at upgrading it into a computer-controlled curing oven !!!
We’re looking to commercialise our automated air station that can run your infusions for you while you monitor it from your sofa (as we do in our videos) & are thinking about dual use in ‘compressor-mode’ to spray the finished parts.
Foam board composites are rarely the finished product (barring surfboards, perhaps). Our community looks at automations, fixings, business funding & even tax. To save time, it’s often who you know and what they know ๐
Projects in progress
We are ….
– editing over 1TB of ‘workshop’ video content containing over 80 hours of content across over 8 infusions & tests, that produced around 60 foam core and flat composite panels
– doing a soft quiet launch of this website, while we debug the plethora of details needing correction, mostly in product details
– preparing for what will hopefully be a very loud and noisy launch on YouTube & various other social media platforms
…except there are quite a few things that the creator can do to influence their youtube “luck”, and we’ve searched for; studied, and implemented all that time permits
#1 is to have amazing content, and after replicating the moon’s atmosphere on the kitchen table, we think we might have some youtube success
Infusion Innovations: #1 Tool-less Infusion Resin Trap
Resin Traps are a sticky problem – either the hoses plug onto a tail-barb which sets full of resin, or the steel pot prevents you seeing when to empty the cup resulting in a sticky bottom. & They’re not cheap !!
Making our own allowed “us” to learn so many things … while it cost us a lot of cash & time, we know it like all our systems are leak-proof, which makes any leak tracing a very quick downstream process ๐ (+ we now have good importing relationships for high-quality RTV Silicone)
We’ve got the infusion guides, resin calculators and soon CAD Kwik-Start Templates – all free to download – we’re just boosting you on your Journey.
We were just testing out the youtube account ๐
Publishing a quickie vid tuaght us a bit about how youtube works, especially titles, thumbnails, the critical importance of subtitles for the algorithm & engagement. We’ll see how that works out shortly (@ Aug ’25) & always be doing continuous improvement anyways
Infusion Innovations: #2 Next Gen Infusion
We really had no choice but to look into sharing our technologies after this vacuum breakthrough – NLC’s VARTM Ultra-Lite Infusorยฉ (Tool-less, waste-free 100% vacuum double-walled re-usable silicone resin infusion).
It was the most apt description: VARTM Ultra-Lite ยฉ has the potential to replace the standard vacuum bagging method of composite infusion used for around 20 years, which many production boat builders are proudly boasting as soon as they introduce this process to their factories. There are some failures too (link).
We need perfect vacuum infusion every time, and vacuum bags don’t do that for us.
Instead we 3D- engineered a silicone vacuum containment system down to tenths of a millimeter of accuracy, before trying over and over and over to eliminate weak spots.
Did we do it?
